Attack on Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore
On March 3, 2009, 12 unidentified gunmen fired on a convoy carrying Sri Lankan cricketers in a non-bulletproof bus, near Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore, Pakistan. The cricketers were on their way to play the third day of the second Test against Pakistan. Six members of the Sri Lankan cricket team were injured and five Pakistani policemen were killed. According to the police, grenades and rocket launchers were found at the site of the attack.
The Sri Lankan team was on a cricket tour to Pakistan after India pulled out of the tour due to the 2008 Mumbai attacks. The second Test, which was the last scheduled fixture of the tour was abandoned as a draw. The Sri Lankan team were then taken to the stadium and airlifted from the pitch via Air Force Helicopters, and immediate arrangements were made for the Sri Lankan team to return to Sri Lanka on the next available flight.
